With the arrival of warmer weather, our olive trees are beginning to flower!
The flowers of Nocellara del Belice olive trees begin appearing in April, when daytime temperatures reach 20–25 °C.
These tiny flowers are small, white and scentless.
They grow in an inflorescence known in Italian as a mignola.
The formation of flower clusters and the flowering that continues through May happen gradually, beginning on the south-facing side of the tree, with breezes helping pollination.
Many factors affect how many flowers actually become olives: sudden weather changes, nutrient or water shortages, an excessive crop in the previous year, weakening of the tree or disease.
Below are some photographs we took showing the beautiful transition from flower cluster to bloom. For us olive growers, it is the first moment when we begin to glimpse the fruits of our work.
If you walk among olive trees in spring, you can enjoy the beauty of this natural process and the sense of vitality it brings. Be careful of unexpected encounters, though: today we found a beehive on a branch of one of our trees. In such cases, avoid disturbing it and keep your distance so that the bees are not prompted to take flight.
